Sustainable Fibre

Synthetic fibres, which are used extensively in clothing, packaging, and various industrial applications, account for 8% of global CO2 emissions and pose a significant environmental challenge due to their high resource consumption and lack of recyclability. Annually, 90 million tons of these fibres are produced, utilizing the equivalent of 4 million Olympic pools of water and 800 Hoover Dams of electricity, emitting as much CO2 as 1 billion cars. The presence of spandex — found in nearly 60% of all apparel — exacerbates the issue by making garments unrecyclable.

To address these challenges, FIBR.BIO produces high-performance fibres and valuable co-products from organic waste and seawater using genetically engineered bacteria. By offering 100% bio-derived alternatives to synthetic fibres, the startup aims to eliminate the environmental impact of these materials, contributing to a more sustainable future.

The company’s key product is a 100% biologically derived spandex alternative fibre, designed to replace traditional synthetic fibres in athletic and other garments. FIBR.BIO also plans to expand its portfolio to include bio-derived kevlar and waterproofing materials. Additionally, the company offers licensing of its materials and co-produces chitin and pigments, which have applications ranging from water treatment to health supplements. Their entire production process is carbon-negative, generates zero waste, and is fully circular — making the company’s approach both innovative and environmentally responsible.

Ready to Compete (and scale)

FIBR.BIO is committed to growing and improving their business by focusing on three key areas: refining their business strategy and advancing their technology. By participating in the 2024 New Ventures BC Competition, the cleantech startup wants to challenge itself against other top technology innovators in British Columbia. The competition provides access to critical experts and mentors who can help refine their business model and presentation skills, ensuring the company is well-positioned to scale and compete in the market.

Looking ahead, FIBR.BIO’s primary focus is on advancing their technology, particularly in scaling up production and making their processes commercially viable. They recognize that technology is the cornerstone of their growth and are dedicated to taking significant steps towards commercial readiness. Additionally, they will continue to emphasize the importance of a capable and diverse team with complementary skill sets. The best advice they’ve received is to focus on fundamentals and build strong relationships with your suppliers and community, as these are essential for company growth.

From Bio-Goop to Bio-Spandex

FIBR.BIO’s journey has been marked by significant accomplishments and pioneering innovations. The company’s proudest achievement is the development of their beachhead product, bio-spandex. Transforming formless goop from bacteria into actual, usable fibres stands as a testament to their groundbreaking work in the field. Additionally, the biotech startup has successfully utilized food and organic waste to manufacture their products in seawater, showcasing their commitment to sustainability and innovative processes. Reaching the third round of the New Ventures BC (NVBC) Competition further underscores their progress and recognition within the industry.

However, the path to these achievements was not without its challenges. Developing the technology behind their products was a monumental task that took years of iteration with different DNA sequences and food scraps. From creating glow-in-the-dark goop to finally developing a workable product that maintains its integrity, FIBR.BIO faced numerous technical hurdles. The dedication and persistence required to overcome these challenges highlight the resilience and ingenuity of the FIBR.BIO team as they continue to push the boundaries of sustainable fibre production.
