Qase helps Canadians connect with experienced lawyers and provides everything customers need to access legal services online. Nearly half of people encounter at least one legal problem in any three-year period, but only one in five get help from a lawyer. Qase makes it easy for people to find and work with lawyers entirely online.
Supply and Demand
When Qase launched in April 2019, they did so with only five lawyers. Now, through their partnership with the B.C. Lawyer Referral Service, Qase will be facilitating upwards of 30,000 referrals per year in the province.
In June 2020, the Gastown-startup launched a similar initiative in the Bay Area, which has led to huge local demand. Between BC and California, Qase currently has a backlog of more than 2,600 lawyers that will be onboarded to their platform.
Back for more
Qase holds the distinction of qualifying for Round 3 of the New Ventures Competition in back to back years. The biggest breakthrough for the company since the 2019 competition has been their strategic partnerships with non-profit bar associations. These partnerships have helped secure the supply-side of their for-profit, two-sided marketplace while providing a clear pathway for Qase to inexpensively enter and scale in the U.S. market.
Raising the bar
Qase CEO, Dan Zollmann, believes that COVID-19 has changed everyone’s understanding and expectations for online service delivery. Because of that, his company’s vision is to become the ‘Amazon of online professional services’. Qase has engineered referral tools into their platform that will enable the startup to move beyond law in the future, harnessing extraordinary network effects to become a billion-dollar marketplace.
Learning on the job
Former Hewlett Packard CEO, Carly Fiorina, once said “planning is good, but learning beats planning every time.”
Qase’s success ultimately hinges on how quickly they can learn from both the supply and demand sides of their marketplace — and how quickly they can embed those learnings into their platform and service.
