Competition alumni have raised over 200 million dollars in investment financing and generated over 3,100 jobs for British Columbians. Successful alumni MediaCore has raised over $1 million and employs 20. Register now for the 2014 competition.
Victoria-based digital video company MediaCore has more than doubled in size since winning first prize in the 2012 BCIC-New Ventures BC competition.
The company has grown from eight employees before the competition to 20 employees today, and has moved into its first commercial office space—almost 2,500 square feet in Bastion Square.
MediaCore’s cloud-based video education and training platform simplifies the process of capturing, managing, storing and delivering streaming video from disparate sources to users anywhere on any device, including smart phones.
It particularly targets K-12 schools, post-secondary institutions and corporate training programs, and already has a customer base of more than 300 schools and universities in the U.S., U.K. and Canada.
“Since the competition, we’ve been able to attract a variety of really great customers,” says operations manager Christina Seargeant. “We do focus on higher education, but also have some exciting enterprise customers.”
The Four Seasons Hotel chain, for example, now uses MediaCore’s platform to distribute video training programs for employees worldwide.
In January 2014, MediaCore introduced a new innovation at an education conference in London, England—a collection of 1,200 science-focused educational video clips from BBC Worldwide Learning. The clips, from BBC programs such as Planet Earth and Blue Planet, will be available through MediaCore and delivered on a variety of devices.
“If you’re teaching biology, for example, you can access biology-related content to go along with your lesson,” explains Seargeant. “It’s definitely a feature that distinguishes us in this space.”
In 2012, the company raised $1 million from private angel investors in the U.S. and U.K., and initiated a further financing round last year.
In 2013 Fast Company magazine recognized MediaCore as one of the world’s most innovative companies in digital video, setting the company alongside industry giants such as YouTube, Vimeo and Hulu.
Last year, sales grew by 379 per cent, and MediaCore forecasts an additional 75 per cent growth in 2014.
